P.T. Pixelated Tribute Demo
About:
P.T. - Pixelated Tribute Demo is sneak peek into a free individual fan project paying tribute to two of the best games ever made: "Below the Root" on the Commodore 64, with it's early era open world metroidvania style platformer gameplay; and "P.T./Silent Hills" by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro - briefly released on the Playstation 3 before being canceled and eventually removed from the Playstation store all together. Both games have striking similarities: a focus on walking/exploration and environmental engagement combined with stunning graphics for their time.
I decided to create P.T. Pixelated Tribute for many reasons, but the biggest reason is that there has never been a satisfactory explanation for the parasites that infect the puppet nurses, puppet doctors, Lisa Garland, and Cybil Bennet. What are they, why are they there? Why are they not in subsequent games? They appear to be somewhat sentient, and considering the occult/spiritual references in the franchise combined with body horror; I found a lack of lore around the parasites to be lost opportunity to add to the depth of the Silent Hill multiverse. Creating a Game Boy game to share my headcannon feels like the right thing to do, both to satisfy my own need for closure in a neglected aspect of the original Silent Hill; and to pay tribute and preserve knowledge of two of the best video games ever made (in my opinion).
If you have never heard of the original P.T. Playable Teaser released by Hideo Kojima, please watch YouTube videos about it so you can better understand why the game is structured the way it is. Thanks!
Credits:
William "Bill" Groetzinger created the original tilesets for "Below the Root" and "Alice in Wonderland," which I have (gratefully) obtained his permission to use his pixel tiles for use in this project. He is still working as a graphic artist and I encourage anyone who needs work done to seek him out.
A.J. Booker has provided music for this project, and I recommend supporting his work here on itch.io as well.
Thorbjørn Lindeijer has provided a wonderful tool called Tiled, which I used extensively to create the maps and make them compliant with GBStudio tileset requirements. If you need a tile editor for your games, I not only recommend this wonderful program but encourage everyone to support his work.
Last but not least, Chris Maltby created the gbstudio game engine for which this game would not be possible. Please donate and support him as well.
Legal Disclaimer:
Konami and Konami only owns the rights to Silent Hill, the entire franchise, and it's merchandise. I am not the creator of P.T./Silent Hills, nor do I represent Konami, the Silent Hill franchise, or anything related to it in any way. I am but a mere plebian starstruck with the Silent Hill multiverse.
This game is solely a fan project that is helping me learn how to use GBStudio. This game is completely free of charge, and while I would be grateful for any donations they are certainly not required. Instead, I encourage players to support those who helped me listed above or to purchase Silent Hill games and franchise merchandise from Konami instead.
Thanks for letting me share my headcannon with everyone!
